Northeast Georgia Medical Center is a soothing environment for patients and staff

opened the state’s largest freestanding ambulatory surgery center. The facility features eight operating rooms, two procedure rooms, and ample recovery and pre-op space. With experienced physicians and staff, NGMC aims to enhance patient care and expand quality services.

The Problem

Recognizing the need to create a more patient-centric environment, NGMC embarked on a redesign of its new surgical center. The goal was to replace the sterile, impersonal atmosphere with a soothing and inviting ambiance. Through collaboration with architects and designers, the team brought this vision to life. A crucial component of the design was the implementation of a cutting-edge flooring system that not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also prioritizes durability, comfort, and cleanliness.

Before the redesign, the facility suffered from recurring flooring problems that led to costly and disruptive repairs. Welded-seam vinyl flooring was particularly troublesome due to frequent damage and staining, while terrazzo required invasive and expensive repairs. These ongoing maintenance issues hindered daily operations and drove up costs significantly.

Architects sought a flooring solution that aligned with NGMD’s vision for a patient-friendly environment. The ideal flooring needed to be visually appealing, exceptionally durable, and easy to maintain. Additionally, it should provide comfort for staff and patients, resist staining, and create a seamless, hygienic surface.

Solution

NGMD and the design team selected Floor Poxy to provide a flooring solution. Based on the facility’s needs, Floor Poxy recommended the Quartz System. This innovative flooring exceeded expectations by offering endless design possibilities and complete resistance to Betadine staining. The system’s easy cleaning significantly reduced operating room turnover times, enhancing overall efficiency. Its ergonomic comfort, low maintenance, and attractive appearance satisfied staff, patients, and visitors alike.

FloorPoxy Quartz System offered unparalleled design flexibility, allowing for intricate patterns and customized colors in every room. Its seamless, low-maintenance surface dramatically cut costs on upkeep and repairs. Combining the aesthetics of terrazzo with the durability of polymer and the comfort of vinyl, FloorPoxy provided the most practical and economical choice for NGMD. This exceptional product merges the best attributes of traditional flooring into a single, superior solution.

Installation

The new ambulatory center required a lightweight concrete base, which historically presented moisture-related flooring challenges for NGMD. To mitigate this issue, an osmotic pressure resistant grout was applied before the mortar. This innovative approach prevented the floor from deteriorating.

To create a visually striking and functional space, plastic strips were used to form distinctive circular and flowing patterns across the facility. Each room featured a unique geometric design complemented by its wall color. A six-inch integral cove base, constructed with FloorPoxy’s Quartz System, was installed to enhance cleaning and sanitation. The entire flooring project was completed in less than two months.

The FloorPoxy Quartz System typically consists of a primer coat (FPX 1200 or Vapor Seal), followed by multiple layers of epoxy (FPX 1200, 3300, or 3100) embedded with colored quartz. Additional fill coats (FPX 3100 or 3300) may be applied, and a final topcoat (FPX 9510 or 9700) can be added for enhanced performance. For seamless integration at the floor-wall junction, an integral cove base (FPX3100COVE) is recommended. It is essential to consult individual product information sheets for specific system requirements.
